The instructor must be able to satisfy nearly all of the learning needs of each participant.

This is only possible in a reasonably-sized group.

According to experience this means a group of no more than 6-8 people.

  • An appropriate training for people with limited experience should last a full work day. This should include training in a standard rescue technique from above with a rescue apparatus.
  • Specialized rescue techniques require additional training sessions.

Increasingly, companies are realizing the need to train their employees for working at height. Especially concerning the use of personal safety equipment.

Vergl. VUV Art. 5 & 8

The worker must:

•    be at least 18 years old (vergl. Art. 4 / ArG V5 & SR 822.115.2)
•    be physically and mentally fit (Selbstdeklaration)
•    not have problems with drugs or alcohol
•    not be scared of heights

Currently workers are not required to pass a physical exam before performing dangerous work at height.
Nor are they examined for their suitability for the job (similar to BG41 in Germany).
The worker is however required to disclose any health problems to the employer whenever the health of a third person may be put at risk.

At risk training sessions for working at height, it is recommended that the participants fill out and sign a declaration of their current health condition.

Here is one example.

Site safety measures and technical solutions (i.e. scaffolding, safety nets, and scissor-lifts) take priority over personal safety equipment (harnesses, climbing ropes, anchors).

The use of personal safety equipment should be implemented wherever the entire site cannot be secured, or where working on a platform would be more dangerous than roping up. The argument that “scaffolding is expensive” does not justify not building one.

Important:
Rescue should always be possible with the equipment on site.
